Everyone Lives in a Flood Zone

Everyone Lives in a Flood Zone

Everyone lives in a flood zone.

Yes, you read that right.

One of the most common myths about floods is that if you don’t live near water, you’re not at risk. The truth, however, is that you don’t need to live in a flood zone to be at risk. In fact, all 50 states have fallen victim to floods or flash floods in the last 10 years.

How could this be?

There are many types of floods that we are all vulnerable to regardless of where we live.

Coastal Flood

The inundation of land along coastal areas as a result of higher than average high tides, which are exacerbated by heavy rainfall and onshore winds.

Storm Surge

An abnormal rise in water levels along the coast as a result of forces generated from severe storms, winds and waves.

Inland Flooding

Flooding caused when moderate to high precipitation accumulates over a prolonged period of time, intense precipitation over a short period of time, or river overflow from debris jam or levee failure.

Flash Flood

Heavy and excessive rainfall in less than 6 hours ripping through river beds, urban streets or mountain canyons.

River Flood

The overflow of river banks as a result of excessive rainfall, frequent thunderstorms, snowmelt or ice jams.
